Black Excellence Celebration
Black Excellence Celebration was created to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions made by Black students, faculty, and staff at Appalachian State University. In the spirit of celebration, 14 awards will be presented. The application for awards is on App Sync. Everyone has the ability to nominate students, faculty, and staff.
Faculty and Staff Mentor Award:
Is presented to a faculty or staff member who has provided outstanding support for students through advising, mentoring, coaching and or research.
Excellence in Teaching
Is presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in teaching. The ideal candidate for this award has inspired students intellectually and demonstrated a commitment to enhancing the intellectual vitality/academic environment of the Black community.
Outstanding Leadership Award
Is presented to a student who has held key leadership positions in one or more student organizations and has shown sustained commitment to the Black community at Appalachian. GPA Requirement of 3.0
Community Service and Volunteerism Award
Is presented to a student who has demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to public service. Ideal candidates for this award have dedicated time and energy to community service endeavors that have made positive contributions to individuals and/or organizations.
Black Arts Award
Is presented to a student who has excelled in the area(s) of music, dance, theatre and/or visual arts. An ideal candidate for this award is someone who has pronounced dedication to the arts and has freely shared their talent to enhance the Black community or represent the community in a positive way.
Program of the Year Award
Is presented to a Black Student Organization that executed a program/event of overall excellence this academic year. Ideal nominations for this award are those programs that both impacted the audience in attendance and had a lasting impact on the community.
Graduate Student of the Year Award
Is presented to a graduate student who has demonstrated exceptional academic and intellectual achievement through cutting edge research in a particular field of study. The ideal candidate for this award represents scholarly excellence at Stanford and serves as an academic role model to fellow students.
Best Programming Collaboration
Is presented to two or more student organizations (one being a Black Student Organization) that have demonstrated exceptional collaboration skills on a program or event. Ideal candidates for this award have not only contributed financially to an event, but all groups worked together consistently from creation, coordination and execution of the event
Global Citizenship Award
Is presented to a student who has shown a high level of involvement and commitment to the Black community abroad. Ideal candidates for this award are those who, through dedication to research, service or other work, have achieved exceptional success in rebuilding and uplifting the Diaspora.
Horizon Award
Is presented to a first year student who has demonstrated strong leadership skills at Appalachian. Ideal candidates for this award are those who, through scholastic achievement and campus engagement, have shown their commitment to uplift their communities. 3.0
Legacy Award
Is presented to a graduating senior who has excelled in leadership, service, and scholarship throughout their tenure at Appalachian. Ideal candidates for this award are those who have created opportunities for others and have given back to their communities. 3.0
Athlete Award
Is presented to a student who has participated in at least two semesters of a division one sport. Ideal candidates for this award are those who have shown exceptional leadership skills within their sport and in their involvements on campus.
Peer Mentor Award
Is presented to a student who has provided outstanding support for their peer students through mentorship, friendship, and academic support.
Student Organization of the Year Award
Is presented to a Black Student Organization that has executed consistent quality programming that has impacted the community in a significant and/or unique way. Ideal nominees are organizations with consistent excellence in programming and/or organizations that have shown great improvement.
